![]() Science experiments in electrophotography ! Introduction Kirlian photography or corona discharge photography or electrophotography or high-voltage photography is a process where immensely interesting patterns are created by electric discharge! Static electricity and electric sparks may also create patterns in dust for example or a high-voltage high-frequency power supply may create amazingly colourful shapes and patterns on colour film or black-and-white ! The process applied to create the photos below was by using a high-voltage at a high-frequency where a normal 35mm colour film captured the result ! Here we have used Kirlian photography as special effects photography. Some of the photos seem to resemble a lunar landscape circling some distant planet, but the 'rocks' are only a couple of dust particles that landed on the film. The objects photographed range from leaves, metal rods, metal rings, etc. Another approach to Kirlian photography is pure science and the scientific claims made by Russian born Semyon Kirlian and Valentina Kirlian. The Kirlians found that by applying a high-voltage at a high-frequency on an object a beautiful colour aura would appear around the object. The discharge (rich in ultraviolet light) of the high-voltage high-frequency on the object was enough to be captured on photographic film without using additional artificial light. The Kirlians claimed certain medical benefits in revealing illnesses at a very early stage, revealing moods of people, a person's aura, etc. A number of factors determine the result of Kirlian photography:
Remember to keep a log book of objects photographed, film make, film speed, exposure time, maybe even make a note of the moisture content in the air. Think of creating a Kirlian photo album or entering a Kirlian photograph in a photo contest. Happy creative art and discoveries !! SAFETY FIRST ! Please note a word of caution, Kirlian photography is not for people with heart problems or a pacemaker or that are connected to any form of life support apparatus !!!
